How to Clean Up Three Common Pet Accidents

We all love our furry friends and feel affection for them as one of the family. Just like children, they add the excitement of both lovely chaos and mild destruction to our homes.

Bringing a dog or cat into your home comes with the inevitable tumbleweeds of hair and paw prints. Along with these not so daunting situations come the unexpected mishaps that tend to catch you off guard. Indoor accidents you never see coming, like when you are house-training a puppy or have a cat with a fussy stomach.

Here we offer solutions to treat some common issues and help to prevent stains and eliminate odors.

Eliminating Urine Odors

When you have to go, you have to go, right?

Sometimes pets cannot wait for their owner to bring them outside to relieve themselves. But when nature calls, why does it call our pets to the carpet?

Urine stains are some of the most troublesome messes for pet owners. To combat these stains, start by firmly blotting up any excess urine that has not completely dried yet.

For a simple, all-natural cleaning solution, mix in a 1:1 ratio of white vinegar and water and add a little baking soda. Pour the mixture over the stain covering it completely. Next, use a clean cloth or paper towel to blot the area and lift the stain. This will probably be all you will need to do to remove the stain of more recent accidents.

If you have a more stubborn stain, you may have to use a scrub brush to work the solution through the carpet's fibers. After you have lifted the stain and the solution has dried, sprinkle some baking soda over the area. Let the baking soda sit for 15 to 20 minutes, then vacuum it up. This will help to reduce the odor. Repeat this step as necessary.

Cleaning Up Number Two

Even though urine stains may prove harder to remove, number two is most definitely less pleasant.

When dealing with poop, begin by getting rid of the waste. Next, soak the area in cool water first. Make sure to use cool water as hot water will set the stain. Mix the following solution: two cups of water, one tablespoon of white vinegar, and one tablespoon of dishwashing liquid. Dab this solution onto the area with a clean cloth until you no longer see any color being picked up from the stain.

Next, dab the area with a sponge of cool, clean water, and then blot it dry with a cloth or paper towels. Lastly, use the previously detailed baking soda technique to make sure there is no lingering smell.

Goodbye to Hairballs and Vomit

If you have a feline friend living in your home, you are no stranger to the sounds of them coughing up what we presume to be a hairball. Even if you are lucky enough to find them before the main event, it isn't easy to coax them onto the tile floor. Most likely, what you will find next is a wonderful little pile of vomit left on the carpet. This is another unavoidable task we face when caring for our furry friends.

To start, scrape the contents of the vomit off the carpet using a flat surface. If the vomit is chunky, wait until it dries a bit, as it will be easier to scrape or even lift off the carpet. Once removed, make the solution referenced above using the same application method along with the baking soda. Repeat each step as necessary.

Having a pet does not mean you have to get rid of all the carpets in your house. Follow these easy cleaning tips to tackle the messes and spend more time cuddling with your furry friends!
