So, how do you prevent mold from growing in your carpet?
First – keep it clean. Average household dirt is roughly 40% organic. That means an unclean carpet can likely provide the food mold needs to grow. Vacuuming is a key component in removing dirt thereby preventing mold growth. Other measures of preventative maintenance include spot cleaning and shampooing your carpet.
Keeping your carpet dry is just as important as keeping it clean. This can be especially tricky in the winter months when snow is tracked into the home. To prevent dampness, encourage shoe and boot removal at your entry door. Place footwear onto a rubber mat where the melting snow can collect. Should the carpet become wet, soak up excess water with an absorbent towel. Or, if you have one, use a shop vac. Then direct a fan at the wet spot to quicken drying.
Lastly, having your carpets professionally cleaned will help prevent mold growth. According to the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), a good rule of thumb is to professionally clean your carpet every 12 months. This will also help extend the life of your carpet as well as remove dirt that has become lodged into the carpet fibers.
