Prevent Mold Growth in Your Home

Mold needs three things to grow: moisture, food, and mild temperatures.

Mold needs three things to grow: moisture, food, and mild temperatures.

Mold is an unwanted guest in anyone’s home. Not only is it unsightly, it can be detrimental to your health. By depriving mold of the resources needed to grow, you can prevent mold from settling into your home.

First, mold needs moisture to grow and thrive. Allowing moisture to sit for extended period of times provides mold with an opportunity to spread. Get rid of any lasting moisture.

Oftentimes, moisture is caused by water leaks. Placing a bucket under a leak isn’t the only action you should take. Water leaks from ceilings, walls, and pipes can lead to mold growth in those areas. Fix leaks quickly and dry the areas to prevent mold growth.

Humidity also contributes to mold growth. Here are tips to minimize humidity in your home:

  • Open windows when it’s hot outside

  • Close windows when it’s raining

  • Ventilate specifically moist rooms (bathroom, kitchen)

  • Use dehumidifiers

In addition to moisture, mold needs warm temperatures, food (any organic material) and opportunity. On warm days, use an air conditioner to regulate temperatures and minimize mold growth. Vacuuming and dusting can reduce growth by depriving mold of sustenance. Regular cleaning can also lessen the amount of mold spores entering your home, thereby reducing the opportunity for mold growth.
