Conduct Regular Maintenance on Your Sump Pump

News & Information > Conduct Regular Maintenance on Your Sump Pump
10/25/2018

Sump pumps are a leading cause of flooding in basements. We receive many calls where there are thousands of dollars in damage due to a malfunctioning sump pump. In most cases, this damage could have been prevented simply by checking the unit. The most common reasons for a sump pump flooding are:

  • Pump isn’t working correctly
  • Pump has become clogged with debris
  • Pump isn’t plugged in

For beginners, the sump pump is an appliance that removes excess water from a basement. This is especially crucial when there are heavy rains or if there is a draining issue. The sump pump should discharge the water to the home's yard and not be hooked up to the sanitary sewer or discharge into a sink or other drain.

Since sump pumps often sit idle for extended periods, it is prudent to conduct simple and regular maintenance. This will keep your sump pump in tip-top shape so it is working when you need it most.

Quarterly Sump Pump Maintenance
  • Clean pump inlet screen
  • Check the power cord and make sure it is connected to power
  • Dump a bucket of water into the sump to raise the float and make sure the pump turns on

Annual Sump Pump Maintenance
  • Remove the pump from the sump and clean it and inspect it
  • Clean out the sump
  • Check the Owner's Manual to see if the pump bearings require grease or oil
  • Replace the pump in the sump
  • Check power cord and make sure the cord is connected to power
