How to Prevent a Clogged Dryer Vent

News & Information > How to Prevent a Clogged Dryer Vent
10/3/2018

More than
2,900 clothes dryers catch fire annually. Since failure to clean the exhaust is the leading cause, a majority of these fires could have been prevented.

Dryer vents clog when lint accumulates in the ventilation system causing blockage. There are a variety of ways that a dryer vent can clog with lint. Here are the most common:

  • Lengthy dryer vent with bends and curves
  • Dryer vent tubes made from pliable plastic or foil, which have been damaged (crushed/dented)
  • Poorly connected dryer vent screens
  • Ventilation screens intended to prevent animal access

Each of these variations can allow lint to collect. When the lint is not removed, the result is blocked ventilation. This prevents flow of air from the dryer to the outdoor vent, which creates tremendous levels of heat. The high temperatures can cause highly flammable particles like lint and clothing to catch fire. Regular cleaning of your ventilation system can prevent a fire by allowing a clear flow of air.

Prevent clothes dryer fires by:
  • Cleaning your lint filters every time you use your dryer
  • Cleaning your dryer vent duct work annually

Clogged Dryer Vent: Thinking Beyond Safety
Safety isn’t the only reason you should keep your dryer ventilation system clean. A clean dryer vent can also:
  • Increase energy efficiency. When the vent is clear, your dryer is operating as it was intended.
  • Lower utility costs. Less energy used means lower utility costs.
  • Allow clothes to dry more quickly. The mechanisms of your dryer rely on factory tested heating elements. When the vent is clogged, the heating levels are subject to variation, which will negatively affect the drying cycle.
  • Extend the life of your clothes. As discussed previously, when the dryer vent is clogged, the applied heat is affected. Extreme heat can damage your clothes, especially delicate clothing.
  • Extend the life of your dryer. When exposed to higher heat than intended over a prolonged period of time, the mechanisms of your dryer could fail long before your dryer has reached the end of its service life.
  • Improve indoor air quality. With gas-operated dryers, a clogged vent could cause the release of carbon monoxide.
