Organic material in the form of dust collect on an air conditioner's coil fins; when combined with moisture and ideal temperatures, this is the perfect environment for mold to grow.

Clean Your A/C Unit to Prevent Spread of Mold
Oftentimes it seems as though we go right from winter into summer, skipping the entire spring season here in central New York. And this year, we just can’t shake the cold! Believe it or not, the warm weather will soon arrive and we will be turning on the air conditioning.

Did you know that your air conditioning unit can play host to mold growth? And it makes sense – the system pulls humid, hot air from inside a home. Then, that damp air combines with dust particles and ideal temperatures, resulting in a perfect environment for mold growth.

So, how do you combat it?

First, clean your system. Whether part of an HVAC system or a stand-alone unit, you will want to remove all mold completely. Mold spores are tiny, and you want to prevent contamination in other areas. It is important to capture all contaminants within a contained area to prevent mold from spreading to other areas.

Once the area is contained, clean out all parts of your air conditioning unit including ducts, the evaporator coil and blower. To ensure all mold is removed, you should contact a licensed professional to conduct testing.

Now that your A/C unit is clean, how do you prevent future mold growth? Two simple strategies:
  1. Use a quality air filter that will stop the majority of dust particles from getting into the system, and remember to change it regularly.
  2. Install an ultraviolet light designed for HVAC systems. The light should kill all mold within its range, improving the air quality of your home.
