How to Prevent Freezing Water Pipes

News & Information > How to Prevent Freezing Water Pipes
As outdoor temperatures decrease, it is important for homeowners to turn their attention to their pipes. When water pipes freeze, due to inadequate heat, pressure builds and can cause the pipes to burst.

Did you know: a 1/8-inch crack in a pipe can release up to 250 gallons of water a day. By conducting regular maintenance, you can prevent your home’s water pipes from bursting.

Certain pipes are more prone to freezing, such as:
  • Ones that are exposed to severe cold, like outdoor hoses, swimming pool supply lines and water sprinkler lines
  • Water supply pipes that are in unheated interior areas like basements, attics and garages
  • Pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation
Although these sections of your home may be more susceptible to damage, it is avoidable. Begin preparing before winter arrives:
  • Ensure insulation is installed and secure around pipes.
  • Fix leaks around pipes that could cause cold air to enter and freeze from the inside.
  • Disconnect garden hoses and use an indoor valve to shut off the line that leads to outside water sources.
In addition, when leaving your home during the winter, assure you follow these steps to prevent pipes from freezing:
  • Set your thermostat to no lower than 55 degrees.
  • Shut off and drain your water system.
If your pipes do freeze, don’t panic.
  • Turn on your faucet. If it is only dripping, it is likely that you have frozen pipes; leave the faucet on.
  • Apply heat to the pipes; you may use a hair dryer for this.
  • Call a plumber if the water stream does not return to normal.
