How to Clean Your Chimney & Prevent Home Fire

News & Information > How to Clean Your Chimney & Prevent Home Fire
As the temperatures cool outside, it’s time to turn on the heat inside. The fireplace is a perfect asset. While HVAC systems account for 48% of energy use in a U.S. home, the fireplace is power efficient. It also provides a comfortable home and ambiance.

However, the fireplace also comes with unseen risks. It is imperative to regularly clean your chimney to prevent potential house fires. Here we provide some insight into properly cleaning your fireplace.

Before beginning, make sure your chimney needs cleaning. Wearing goggles and a dust mask, use a flashlight and your fireplace poker to scrape the black surface above the fire chamber. If the indent you make is thin, no cleaning is required. If the creosote (substance created through fireplace use) is ¼-inch thick, cleaning is necessary. Because the smoke chamber can be hard to reach, you may need to call in a professional. If you plan to tackle the job, make sure you have the following materials:
  • Drop cloth
  • Dust mask
  • Flashlight
  • Flue liner brush (metal for clay liner, plastic for metal liner)
  • Long-handled brush
  • Noodle brush
  • Safety glasses
  • Safety harness
  • Shop vacuum
  • Duct tape
  • Poly sheeting

Once your fireplace and the surrounding area are secure, follow these steps to successfully clean your chimney:
  • Acquire a metal bristle brush that fits your chimney.
  • Protect your homes interior by placing a canvas tarp accompanied by a shop vacuum.
  • Start the vacuum and begin cleaning the inside of the chimney from the roof, by adding rods to the metal brush as you descend down.
  • Once there is resistance, start working from the inside of the firebox.
