How to Remove Tough Carpet Stains

News & Information > How to Remove Tough Carpet Stains
Carpet stains can be tough, but removing them doesn’t have to be. Whether it’s wine, gum, grease or wax, it’s possible to tackle the mess yourself. The trick is approaching each stain the proper way to ensure the most satisfying results.

Although certain stains require specific treatment, there are various universal techniques you can use:
  • Blot the stain: Rubbing stains causes the particles to embed within the carpet fibers. In addition, always remember to blot from the outside in.
  • Use vinegar and water: Mix equal parts into a handheld sprayer; spray the area and let it soak for 10-15 minutes. When the stain is removed, rinse the space with warm water.
  • Use shaving cream: Apply to affected area and let it sit for 30 minutes. When set, blot it away and apply vinegar and water to the carpet.

If a stain resists these conventional methods, try these different tricks:
  • Freeze dry gum: Hold ice cubes onto the gum for about 30 seconds. Once solid, remove with a spoon.
  • Use heat to remove grease: Lay paper towels over stain. With iron on lowest setting, apply heat to the stain through the paper towels. The heat will remove the stain; use vinegar mixture and technique above to finish cleaning.
  • Administer heat to wax: Place a cloth under an iron. Heat up the area and scrape off with a knife.
  • Apply hydrogen peroxide to blood: First loosen up the blood with a mixture of equal parts water and mild detergent. Next, apply hydrogen peroxide directly to the stain. Dab the area with a towel to remove.
  • Scrape up crushed candy: Candy that sticks to the carpet can be removed by scraping it with a butter knife. To ensure the sugar does not remain in the fibers, blot the area with soap and water.
