Is It Mold? Questions You Should Ask

News & Information > Is It Mold? Questions You Should Ask

You take every precaution to
ensure mold doesn’t grow in your home. You check within the corners of your ceiling, between the tiles of your floor. Despite your best efforts, mold can still occur.

Before jumping to conclusions, confirm that what you have is truly mold. Many times, black mold can be confused with dirt and stains. If you find yourself unsure of what substance is growing, ask yourself these questions:
  • Is this patch located in a dark, damp, warm area?
  • Is this colony becoming discolored with growth?
  • Does this substance have a velvet-like texture?
  • Are you experiencing a musty, earth-like smell around the area that looks contaminated?

If these seem to describe the substance that is forming, it is highly likely that mold is your offender. Depending on the severity of the infestation, personal removal is possible. However, under certain circumstances, it is sensible to contact a professional:
  • If there has been sufficient water damage that leads to growth of 10 square feet or more
  • If there is suspicion of an outbreak in the heating/ventilation/air conditioning system. This can be determined if mold is visible near the intake system
  • If contaminated water is the culprit of the bacteria
  • If you have pre-existing health concerns that can be worsened by exposure
