Water Damage Prevention Tips

News & Information > Water Damage Prevention Tips
Water damage, due to occurrences such as burst pipes, leaky roofs, and broken valves, can happen at any time. Sometimes a water related situation is out of your control, but there are ways to be proactive.

Here are five tips on how you can ensure your home does not undergo any destruction due to water.
  • Disconnect hoses outside of your home- Come the cold months, stagnant water in hose lines can freeze. As a result of this, pipes can burst from the pressure built up.
  • Maintain trees and bushes- Protect vulnerable pipes from overgrown branches and vines. If shrubbery begins to get out of hand, the roots may wrap around pipes and break them.
  • Know your water main- This is extremely important, as it is the source of all water that is entering your home. When going away for a considerable amount of time, it is always a smart idea to shut this off.
  • Upgrade washing machine hoses- After a certain amount of time, washing machine hoses become old and brittle. Ensure that these are replaced in a timely manner, or they may burst at any time.
  • Monitor your water bill- If you notice a significant increase in your bill, but have no explanation, this may mean a secret leak is occurring. It is important to look closely at this, as it may save you and your home inevitable damage.

In case an unfortunate incident does occur, it is important to know the dangers associated with this type of destruction.
  • Water will soak through everything it crosses, such as personal belongings, furniture and flooring. Depending on the material that certain objects are made of, they may need to be replaced all together
  • Bacteria quickly grow in this type of environment. Bacteria that develop can be harmless or deadly.
  • Failure to quickly remove all of the moisture will only produce long-term effects, such as long-term health effects due to untreated bacteria.
