Ice Dams

With heavy snowfall come ice dams. Most commonly caused by improper insulation and/or construction, an ice dam is a block of ice that builds up on the edges of your roof. Heat from your home inadvertently warms your roof causing the snow to melt. The resulting water runs toward the edge of the roof where it meets cold air and freezes forming ice.

These thick blocks of ice can be dangerous and cause serious damage. Here we have listed potential dangers of ice dams, how you can prevent them and steps to remove them and fixing the damage they cause.

Dangers of Ice Dams
  • Heavy ice dams can fall doing serious damage to property or worse, injuring a person below.
  • Falling ice dams can damage shingles and gutters, possibly pulling these materials off the property.
  • Ice dams can cause water to pool on the roof and under the ice; the water then seeps into the ceilings and walls, causing serious damage.
  • Long-term water damage from ice dams can cause mold to grow on the roof, eventually rotting the roof.

Steps to Prevent Ice Dams
  • Understand how effective your attic insulation and ventilation is working.
  • Use a calcium chloride ice melt product to help break up and melt existing ice dams.
  • To keep ahead of water damage, snap photos where you see frosty buildup. Use the pictures to help target an interior inspection, during which you should check for leaks.

Steps to Remove Ice Dams
  • Mitigate the damage and keep people safe from falling ice.
  • Call a roofing contractor to remove the built-up ice and repair the roof if there is damage.
  • To assess potential water leaks, call a NYS Licensed indoor environmental inspector to evaluate mold and do a damage assessment.
  • You may need to dry out the wall cavities and take some mold prevention steps with the help of a water damage contracting company.
