How to Remove Tile Flooring

News & Information > How to Remove Tile Flooring

Removing a tile floor can be a challenging and time consuming process. Before you get started make sure you have the necessary tools needed in order to remove the flooring. Some of the tools you might need are:

  • A hammer

  • A chisel

  • A prybar

  • A handheld scraper

  • A small sledgehammer

  • A broom

After you have gathered these tools, you should be ready to start your project. To be the most effective with your time, it is wise to follow the steps below in order. Before you start ripping up the tile, make sure you have removed everything sitting on the tile in order to help the rest of the process go smoothly.

  1. Remove trim

  2. Remove fixtures (i.e. toilet, vanity)

  3. Start in a corner

  4. Continue to pry the flooring piece by piece

  5. Once all the tile is removed, remove the under-layment

  6. Clean up

  7. Make sure the surface is smooth

You can also rent a tile stripper from your local hardware store. Although the process may be more expensive, you might be able to save a lot of time.

After all of the steps have been completed, you are ready for your new floor. Good luck!
